The early works of Japanese photographic artist Mayumi Hosokura primarily focused on snapshots. Her first photobook, KAZAN, published in 2012, centred on themes of youth, the body, gender, and desire. This series captured the precarious state and intimacy of Japan's young generation. Her later transparency is the new mystery series juxtaposed portraits of youth with natural objects, contrasting the transience of flesh with the enduring nature of the natural world. Mayumi Hosokura's work is poetic, quiet yet searing, offering an unflinching gaze upon diverse bodies while embracing the fluidity of desire. Her follow-up series, Cyalium, extends this approach to other East Asian cities while synthesising her earlier creative explorations.

The NEW SKIN series marks a shift in the artist's creative practice, transitioning from analogue to digital photography. Both in her subjects and presentation, it reveals her contemplation of hybrid states, pixels, and the act of zooming in and out, while also initiating her exploration of video works. Mayumi Hosokura perceives the camera obscura as a dynamic image, while reflection constitutes a photographic phenomenon. For her, photography transcends static imagery, video works complement her photographic philosophy. After exploring digital and video creations, Hosokura sought to return to more tactile, physical processes, producing the walking, diving and sen to te series through analogue printing and embroidery. Until last year, the artist exhibited works beyond the white cube. The imagery in the a house of bodies series became more abstract, attempting to integrate with the space and present the physical body in a more fluid manner.

‘The Fluid Gesture’ traces Mayumi Hosokura's artistic journey to date. From the subject of her gaze and her reflections on photography to the techniques employed in presenting her work, the artist continually seeks new avenues of expression, navigating the interplay of light and shadow with fluid grace.
